Running from 1869-1888 with fruits, vegetables and other plants the Horticulture, or Flower & Garden, competition has at times also included silkworms (1869), coffee & tea (1871) and salad (1875).  Early settlers took great pride in their gardens and saw them as an opportunity to retain a link with home, William Macarthur and Thomas Mort were both recognised in competitions for their fuchsias before both went on to take on leadership roles with the Agricultural Society.

The competition keeps evolving, reflecting industry and community trends, culminating in a name change in 2007 to the Sydney Royal Flower & Garden Show. An annual showcase for the horticultural industry, the competition displays are visited by tens of thousands of people every year.
