Back in 1823 the first Horse Competition held at the Show gave a prize for best colonial bred stallion, and promotion as a Show winner was a sought-after endorsement. By 1878 attention began to turn towards horse and rider, with the introduction of Showjumping, Harness and Steeplechase. Before long Tentpegging, Rodeo, Polo and Campdraft joined the Sydney Royal Horse Competition and today it is one of the largest held in Australia with Pony Club, Police Horses and Riding for the Disabled also amongst the 6000 nominations competing for a prestigious Sydney Royal ribbon in more than 1000 classes.
