Pig

Pigs came to Australia with the First Fleet in 1788 when 32 pigs were picked up in Cape Town for the eight-week journey to Botany Bay. However, many escaped or were deliberately let loose and feral pigs spread across the land. Those that were safely kept were used for breeding - and eating - and today Australia is home to approximately 5 million pigs.  At the first Agricultural Show in 1824 only a handful of pigs were entered, and prizes of ten Spanish Dollars for Best Colonial Bred Boar and Best Colonial Bred Sow went to John Pye.

Pig breeds exhibited in the Sydney Royal Pig Show now include Berkshire, Duroc, Hampshire, Landrace, Large Black, Large White, Tamworth and Wessex Saddleback, and the competition is recognised as one of the largest and most prestigious in Australia.
