In 1826 the Agricultural Society judged wine for the first time, however quality wines were few and far between. In 1828 James Busby brought grapevine cuttings from the most celebrated vineyards of France, Spain and Germany to New South Wales and established a vineyard at Kirkton, and established his reputation as the father of the Australian wine industry – the James Busby Perpetual Trophy for Best NSW Wine at the Sydney Royal Wine Show is named in his honour.

The integrity of Sydney Royal competitions rests in the hands of accomplished, knowledgeable and, most importantly, independent judges.   Judging process The Sydney Royal Wine Show engages the most experienced and respected Judges in the industry and endorses the development of future judges. The process is overseen by a Chair of Judges and includes six separate judging panels. Each panel consists of one Panel Chair, two Senior Judges and two Associate Judges. Medals are determined by the Judges using the following point scale: Gold medal for outstanding Exhibits gaining 95.0pts and over Silver medal for excellent Exhibits gaining 90.0pts but fewer than 95.0pts Bronze medal for quality Exhibits gaining 85.0pts but fewer than 90.0pts   Judging succession plan To ensure a consistent high standard of judging, the RAS operates the Sydney Royal Associate Judge Program to train the next generation. Joining the Sydney Royal Associate Judge Program provides unique opportunities to: Lean how to score exhibits from experienced senior judges Experience first-hand what it takes to judge fine food and wine Be exposed to emerging trends and the very best producers have to offer Network with industry experts Build experience toward becoming a qualified judge If you are interested in becoming a Associate Judge, please email us with your details at wine@rasnsw.com.au .   Stewarding Stewards play a valuable role ensuring each judging day runs smoothly through the coordination and preparation of exhibits. Acting as a Steward for Sydney Royal competitions provides unique insight into a specific industry and counts as relevant experience toward an Associate Judge role in the future.

The Royal Agricultural Society of NSW (RAS of NSW) is a not-for-profit organisation that has been an influential force in the direction and development of Australian agriculture through competitions, education and events since its foundation in 1822. Today, through the Sydney Royal Wine Show, we are promoting and rewarding excellence in Australian winemaking through several key initiatives. Networks The Sydney Royal Wine Show is committed to attracting the very best professionals as Judges and Stewards, providing an excellent environment for networking and professional development to all participants, resulting in benefits for the industry at large. Development of Judges The judging panel for the Sydney Royal Wine Show is selected by Chair of Judges, PJ Charteris and the RAS of NSW Wine Committee and aims to include a combination of wine educators, winemakers, wine marketers, retailers, sommeliers, journalists and expert amateurs of wine from across Australia. The RAS offers Associate Judge Positions to a range of young industry professionals, including high-performing graduates from the Len Evans Tutorial; the Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET); Sydney Wine Academy; and the Court of Master Sommeliers (CMS). Trade Seminars The Sydney Royal Wine Show will be introducing a new trade event in 2020 designed to educate wine professionals about the Australian Wine Show System and to showcase the Sydney Royal Wine Show. Educational Wine Program Following the Wine Show, small quantities of excess wine stock are donated to a number of tertiary educational institutions across Australia. This stock and their associated scores are used to re-create judging panels as part of the classroom learning process. Len Evans Tutorial Since 2008, the RAS has been a key sponsor of the Len Evans Tutorial, contributing $10,000 annually. This prestigious program, said to be “the best wine school in the world’’, was initiated in 2001 by Len Evans AO OBE, Chair of Judges at the Sydney Royal Wine Show for over 25 years. For more information visit www.lenevanstutorial.com.au. 2022- Andrea Pritzker MW (Dux) 2019 - Adam Walls (Dux) 2018 - Tim Dolan (Dux) 2017 - Julian Grounds (Dux) 2016 – Stuart Horden (Dux) Grants & Scholarship Fund The Royal Agricultural Society of NSW conducts an annual Wine sale, using a portion of excess wine show stock, to benefit the Australian Wine Industry. All proceeds will fund Wine Industry Scholarships and other initatives. Proceeds will not become part of the Wine Show working capital nor benefit the RAS of NSW. The money raised since the first wine sale in 2017, has assisted in expanding the RAS Foundation Scholarship programmes detailed below. In addition, through a partnership with Wine Australia, funds are being used to promote the Australian Wine Industry, supporting wine education and Australian wine exports. Sydney Royal Wine Show Study Scholarship First awarded in 2013, this scholarship honours the memory and contribution of Graham Thorp, Chair of the Sydney Royal Wine Committee from 1984 - 1990. The Sydney Royal Wine Committee, in partnership with the RAS Foundation, offers an annual tertiary scholarship to foster the growth and development of Australia’s next generation of wine industry leaders. This national Award supports a student who demonstrates passion and leadership and who is committed to contributing to the Australian wine industry. Students may be studying anything from agriculture science, horticulture, viticulture, oenology through to marketing, sommelier, lab technician and journalism. The scholarship is for the value of $6,000 for full-time study or $3,000 for part-time study, along with providing opportunities to network with leaders in the wine industry. The Sydney Royal Wine Committee, in partnership with the RAS Foundation, offers an annual scholarship to receive a fully paid position at the Australian Wine Research Institute’s Advanced Wine Assessment Course in Adelaide. This scholarship, first introduced in 2017, aims to encourage and support young professionals who are passionate about wine and committed to forging careers that will contribute to the Australian wine industry. Individuals may also apply for funding to pursue other professional development courses such as, but not limited to, certificates and diplomas offered by WSET and CMS, and the AWRI’s Advanced Viticulture Course.
